Habitat
Solitary to scattered on rotting conifer stumps, logs, or roots, especially pines; widespread but not common, fruiting in summer and fall along the coast and in the Cascade Ranges.

Comments
Tapinella atrotomentosa can be distinguished by its brown to cinnamon-brown velvety cap, dark brown, velvety, often eccentric stipe, decurrent gills with yellowish brown spores, and conifer wood habit.
