Scattered to gregarious on soil or well-rotted wood of conifers; common, fruiting in spring along the coast and in the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges.
Unknown.
Pseudoplectania nigrella can be distinguished by entirely black to blackish-brown, cupulate to saucer-shaped fruitbodies with felted external surfaces and globose spores. Donadinia nigrella, which grows with Pseudoplectania nigrella, is distinguished by a long stipe.
