Solitary or in small clusters on conifer stumps and logs; not common, fruiting from fall through early winter in the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges.
Edible according to Arora.
Pholiota flammans is a strikingly beautiful species is easily recognized by the bright sulphur-yellow fruitbodies covered with bright yellow recurved scales and growth on montane conifer wood. Several other yellow Pholiota species with scaly caps occur in California, but none are as bright yellow as P. flammans.
