Phaeocollybia kauffmanii is one of the larger species in the genus in California. It has a viscid, orangish brown cap, farinaceous odor and taste, and a massive, radicating stipe with a thick cartilaginous rind and firm pith. Phaeocollybia benzokauffmanii differs only subtly in a pinkish brown to purplish brown cap and white young gills; other features are indistinguishable.
