Panellus stipticus
Hattsvampar 14: fig. 172. 1879.
Common Name: none
For description see Miller, Siegel & Schwarz, & 'California Mushrooms'.
Gregarious, often in imbricate clusters on hardwood branches; fruiting in fall through winter widespread.
Inedible. Taste astringent to bitter.
Panellus stipticus can be identified by its tough, leathery fruitbodies with laterally attached, buff-colored cap, close and often forked gills, and astringent (hence “stipticus”), slightly acrid taste. Some North American populations are luminescent, whereas European populations do not emit light, making this an important species for investigations of the genes controlling luminescence in fungi. Recent multi-gene phylogenies show that Panellus stipticus belongs in the genus Mycena, where it will eventually be transfered.
