Lacrymaria lacrymabunda
Hyménomyc. Eur.: 123. 1887.
Common Name: none
Synonyms: Psathyrella velutina (Pers.) Singer; Psathyra lacrymabunda (Bull.) P. Kumm.; Lacrymaria velutina (Pers.) Konrad & Maubl.,
For description see Smith, Siegel & Schwarz, & 'California Mushrooms'.
Solitary to scattered in grassy areas or disturbed habitats, sometimes in forests; uncommon, fruiting in fall in coastal areas.
Reported as edible but questionable; some poisonings have been recorded.
Lacrymaria lacrymabunda can be recognized by robust fruitbodies with yellowish brown fibrillose cap, crowded, broad gills with black spores, a yellowish brown fibrillose stipe, and persistent fibrillose-cottony partial veil. The warted spores, distinctive pileipellis anatomy, and innately fibrillose, non-hygrophanous cap distinguish Lacrymaria from Psathyrella. Lacrymaria species are reminiscent of some in Agaricus, but the latter have free, chocolate brown gills with smooth spores and a more membranous annulus.
