Solitary to scattered, sometimes in fused clusters, in duff under conifers, especially Sitka spruce; fruiting from fall through winter, widely distributed, but not common.
Inedible.
Hydnellum aurantiacum can be recognized by the velvety, irregularly shaped rusty orange to cinnamon cap with a bumpy surface, short white to orangish brown spines, a mild odor, and orange to rusty cinnamon context tissues. No other spine fungus in California has such bright rusty orange tissues.
