Gregarious to cespitose on ground, usually growing from the roots of aspen or cottonwood. Widespread but not common.
Edible
Flammulina populicola is similar to Flammulina velutipes in appearance but are more frequently found in clusters or solitary on the ground at the base of trees. The yellow-brown to orange-brown caps are distinct grom the smaller darker colored brownish caps of Flammulina velutipes.
