Solitary to scattered in soil under red fir and grand fir; not uncommon, fruiting in the fall above 1500 m elevation in the Cascade Ranges and Sierra Nevada.
Edible and excellent.
Butyriboletus abieticola can be distinguished by its appressed-fibrillose to fibrillose-scaly, greyish pink cap that is areolate in age, a reticulate stipe, and blue staining pores.
