Scattered to gregarious under pines and Sitka spruce. Common in the north coast, but does occur throughout most of the state.

Amanita porphyria can be distinguished by the dull greyish lilac to dusky purplish-grey pileus, similar colored stipe and annulus, and by the soft, abruptly bulbous base of the stipe. Other greyish Amanitas in the state lack an annulus, rarely have a bulbous base, and have conspicuous striations on the pileus.
