Solitary to scattered on woody debris or wood-rich soil in conifer woods (fir, pine) above 1600 m.; not uncommon, fruiting in spring and fall in the Sierra Nevada.
Unknown.
Psathyrella ellenae var. yubaensis can be distinguished by a wrinkled, non-striate chestnut-brown cap that fades to cream and a white stipe with a persistent, thin, membranous annulus. The similar Psathyrella longistriata has a larger, distinctly striate cap, a larger, striate annulus, and fruits in fall and winter at lower elevations.
