Solitary to scattered to gregarious on the ground in duff, moss, or woody debris; winter to spring, fairly common.
Unknown.
Plectania milleri can be distinguished by its stellate margin of its dark black cup, felty-tomentose underside, and by its long elliptical spores. Plectania melastoma has distinctive orange granules on the cap underside.
