Pholiota squarrosa
Führ. Pilzk.: 83. 1871.
Common Name: none
For description see NA Pholiota, and Knudsen & Vesterholt (2008).
In dense cespitose clusters on aspen, sometimes other hardwoods and conifers; fruiting from late summer through fall in the Sierra Nevada and Cascade Ranges.
Unknown.
Pholiota squarrosa can be recognized by tawny, erect to recurved scales covering the tan to straw-colored cap and stipe. The dry cap, greenish-tinged gills, and garlic odor (in some populations) help distinguish it from Pholiota squarrosoides, which has a viscid cap surface under the scales, white young gills, and an indistinct odor
