Solitary to densely clustered, Mendocino County north, primarily in old growth forests; locally common; fall and winter.
Unknown.
Phaeocollybia redheadii can be distinguished by its large size, viscid orange to dark red-brown fleshy cap with inrolled margin, pinkish or yellowish buff young gills, robust firmly stuffed pinkish buff stipes, and a farinaceous or cucumber odor. A similar large species, Phaeocollybia benzokauffmanii is different in having a smoky violet to pinkish-brown cap when young and becoming dark vinaceous brown to dark brown in age.
