Gregarious to cespitose in humus under conifers (fir & pine); relatively common, fruiting from spring through late summer above 1600 m elevation in the Sierra Nevada.
Unknown.
Cortinarius thiersii can be distinquished by a yellowish brown to olive-brown cap with red KOH reaction, yellow young gills, and a pale greenish yellow to ochraceous stipe.
